can i blame the Thai military?

there were a few environmental issues [like 12 inches of snow in Denver] that dragged out the time it took to get to Thailand.  but there are some other things going on that travelers, tourists and anyone who flies in the area should know.

the FAA [United States Federal Aviation Authority] has down graded the safety level of Thai Airways for 'failure to meet minimum international standards' - this doesn't come as a surprise to anyone because it's a decision that is made after multiple warnings have been issued to the carrier that they are being 'red flagged'.

why did this happen?  i have very fond memories of my first trip on Thai Airways to Bangkok in 2003 where i flew first class and was treated like a princess.  Thai Airways is the major carrier in and out of Bangkok and is a state-controlled company that the military government targeted for reform after seizing control in May of 2014.  well, they've reformed it.  now they can't fly into the US.

why do i care?  i like United Airlines.  i have a ton of miles on United and because of that they treat me well.  Thai Airlines has been part of the United partner alliance but they are pulling away from them because of the downgrade.  so basically my airline of choice has turned off the pipeline of flights to Asia.

add that to the problems with other regional carriers like Air Asia and Malaysia Airlines and what was once an easy affordable region to fly around has now become a big roll of the dice.  i can only suggest you take a Luk Thep [ that's my next post].

Bangkok Airways which is the domestic carrier in Thailand is getting a special post because they deserve special recognition as the AIRLINE WITH THE WORST SERVICE.

getting to Thailand

on my way to Thailand i arrived at Denver International early enough to catch breakfast at Root Down.  honestly, i'm going to miss that place.  the eggs, potatoes and croissant were done perfectly and the garnish of arugula is the perfect green to plate.  it's amazing to me that so few restaurants can deliver fantastic food so consistently.  i took a salad to go so i'd have something on my 12 hour flight if i got hungry.  i'm loving the Denver to Tokyo non stop service on United.  they use the dreamliner which is pretty comfortable for a long flight - at least it was in EPlus where I was sitting - also it wasn't a full flight so when there's an empty seat next to you it feels really roomy.  the entertainment on demand is ridiculous with something like 50 movies available.  i rarely make it to the theatre so I caught up on a bunch of films... i watched Million Dollar Arm then got distracted when a woman five rows behind me started vomiting.  the crew responded accordingly which in this day and age means they put on a hazmat like suit to clean up - depositing everything into a red hazmat container.  the woman was black which of course everyone was associating with the very deadly virus circulating in west Africa.  later i asked the crew if she'd been in Africa and they said she had not.  then i watched the Grand Budapest Hotel and Wolf of Wall Street - yeah i think i'm all caught up on movies for a while.

in Tokyo even though i was just in transit i had to go through an additional security clearance and they did not like that one of my bottles was 4 oz instead of 3 oz.  i tried to keep the contents of the larger bottle by dumping out hairspray in a different bottle but i was weary from the 12 hour flight and i accidentally ended up dumping out both containers.  it made a mess but the Japanese security team didn't seem fazed and were quite polite the whole time.  we'll see how my hair does without any products.

the flight from Tokyo to Bangkok was in an Airbus 380 which is humongous and has over 500 seats.... talk about a people mover!  it was late my time so i grabbed a whole row that was empty, stretched out and fell asleep.  the moment i stepped onto that plane and was greeted by the Thai Airlines flight crew all the wonderful experience i've had with Thailand came rushing through my mind.  they stop and connect with every passenger on the plane - it's just not like the US carriers where the crew will barely look you in the eye and serving a coke is just an extra chore for them.

immigration was super easy - no line and just one question - where would i be visiting. they did have a 'medical scan' set up to detect anyone with an elevated temperature and a request for anyone who had been in West Africa to make themselves known.  i was glad to see they were at least making an effort even though the whole setup was a camera like device pointing at people as they walked by.  i grabbed a taxi to where i was staying and crawled into bed around midnight.

why bank of america sucks

tomorrow i'm off on the adventure and i'm packed and ready to go. with all the air traffic delays i try to get out a day earlier and call United Airlines. just as I have the agent talked into rebooking me a day earlier at no extra charge she sees the flight was booked via Bank of America's travel agency and she's locked out from making any changes.

i have to rant a minute here about BOA.  i had a BOA credit card with some reward points that i wanted to use for this trip but it was really a nightmare, from trying to book a flight online to spending hours on the phone with their customer service and finally even United Airlines couldn't change the reservation because it was made through BOA.  i will never again use BOA for any financial service.  their customer service sucks.

on the other hand earlier this year i picked up Chase's United Explorer Card and could not be more happy with the coverage they offer and their customer service.  i called Chase because while booking a rental the Belizean car agency was pushing their insurance coverage which was pricey.  Chase assured me i was covered and should decline the rental car coverage and provided me a number to call collect if the rental car agency had questions.  in addition the rep reminded me that using my card or all or even part of my travel reservations protects me on any travel interruption.  plus no foreign exchange charges.  that's the kinda company i want to do business with.

meanwhile my friend from London is hanging out in Texas waiting for me to get in for the flight to belize so i decide to get up extra early and standby on the first flight out since my schedule flight leaves no time for delays.
